UK Libraries celebrates International Education Week, Year of South Asia with 'Jeopardy' contest

UK Libraries will host an online “Jeopardy” contest from November 14 thought 18 as part of the campus activities in celebration of International Education Week. The contest will focus on the College of Arts and Science Passport to the World countries, celebrated as part of their Year of South Asia, and is designed to provide information about the countries as well as to raise awareness about the library resources available that provide country information.

  

The winning contestant of the UK Libraries "Jeopardy" contest will receive a $25 Starbucks gift card. The contest will be available online at: http://uky.libsurveys.com/uky-libsurveys-com-southasia and in print at the William T. Young Library Circulation Desk. The contest can also be printed out from the online site and returned to Young Library.  A drawing for the prize will be held in the event of multiple winning entries. The site will be live 8 a.m. Monday, November 14, and will close 5 p.m. Friday, November 18.

The Arts and Sciences Passport to the World program is focusing on the South Asian countries of Afghanistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Pakistan, Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka and the Maldives for this academic year.  Flags from these countries are on display in the Atrium of the Young Library and a flag key is available at the Security Desk, Circulation Desk and the Reference Desk. A research guide has been developed as a companion to the flag exhibit and provides more detailed information on each country.  In addition to the flags from the South Asian countries, an exhibit of books from the library collection on South Asia will be on display before the Thanksgiving holiday break.

An exhibit focusing on India with a Kentucky connection has also been mounted in the Young Library Rose Street entrance.  The exhibit “India through the Eyes of Ellen Churchill Semple” features a series of postcards from early 20^th century India collected by renowned geographer Ellen Church Semple.  Semple was born in Louisville, Kentucky, and worked in the male dominated field of geography from 1901 until her death in 1932. In 1911 and 1912 she took a break from her writing and lecturing to tour the Asian countries of Japan, China, the Philippines, Indonesia and India. The exhibit features the postcards collected during her tour and illustrates Semple’s keen interest in how people and place cannot be separated.

Her focus ranged from the monuments, to transportation, to the people of the region, and illustrates a strong interest in the connection between humans and the environment.  A website on the "Life and Career of Ellen Churchill Semple" has been developed as a companion to the exhibit.  Other library exhibits on past Passport Countries can be found in UKnowledge.

Ellen Churchill Semple Day is celebrated annually on the UK Campus. Now in its 45^th year, the event is organized by the UK Department of Geography and will be celebrated in April of 2017.
